Celaya Or Lala: This is probably one of the main characters. She is the narrator of the story pretty much. She is a little girl about maybe ten years or younger. She is taken on a trip to mexico where she is encountered to stay with her entire father's side of the family. Throughout the first chapters she is decribing herself and other people in her family. She is in Mexico City, MX. She is not very fluent in spanish either. Her customs are more from the United States rather then Mexico.Most of the time in the story she is very curious about things, and doesn't really communicate with her family in Mexico.
Uncle Fat-Face: He is the brother of Lala's father (her uncle). He is a very big guy but his nickname is fat-face because he had a fat face when he was younger.
Uncle Baby Face: He is the other Reyes brother that has ended up going to the trip to Mexico as well along with the other two brothers.
Zelda: This is Lala's mother. Her Mother-in-law and her do not get along as well.Zelda fights a lot wit Lala's father throughout the first few chapters, because of the Awful Grandma who puts stories in Zelda's mind to end the marriage.
Awful Grandma: She is the high maintance grandma but not very typical old nice helpful grandma.She gets on to the kids ever so often for the most little things, and she hides something from all her grand kids. She is more of the person in control who can't stand filthy people.
Grandpa: He is the more Kinder grandparent. He is more into the military things.He served in the commission and fought in war. He says his favorite is Lalo out of all his grand children He maintains peace and mostly doesn't have a say in the house.
Part 2: When I Was Dirt- pages 87- 162 (Charla)
Here are some of the major characters that i read about in the 2nd part:
1. Soledad- she is the Awful grandmother, but the story is told way before she was even a mother. Her mother died when she was very young and her dad stopped caring about her, so she wnet to go live with her Aunty Fina, which didn't help anything. Then, she ran off to be a servant for the Reyes family where she meets Narciso and falls in love with him.
2. Aunty Fina- Aunty Fina is the Aunt the Soledad goes to live with. she has the face of a mexican geisha, tiny feet and hands. she does everything slowy and with grace. although she is caring, she isn't the best mother. she can't really control her kids and she doesn't even really know how many kids she has.
3. Narciso Reyes- he is the Grandfather, but only when he is younger. he was good-looking and a soldier at the time. He reached out to Soledad to help give her a place to live and to help her srurvive. and he eventually fell in love with Soledad. he cares greatly for his mother, just lie everyone else in the war. and he actually ends up losing 3 ribs during the war.
4. Regina- she is Narciso's mother. she is the one who gives Soledad a job, even though she doesn't want to. she may seem very strick, but she is still very caring and always tries to make the best for Soledad.

Exaltracion Henestrosa- a lady that Narciso met while away. She ends up hooking up with Narciso a few times and becomes Narciso's love interest but she ends up running off and abandoning him.
Maria Sabrina- known as "the witch woman" the woman is very strange and is notorious for having "great power." Narciso seeks this woman so that way she could put him under a love spell. She gives Narciso the advice to forget Exaltracion.
